-The new school year is a great time to replace your child’s toothbrush, especially if you can see the bristles are fraying. A good rule of thumb is to replace it every three months (unless it’s fraying) and the new school year is a fun time to do it! Even consider getting your child an electric toothbrush to help them get the best cleaning possible every time they brush!
-Check to make sure your child is cleaning their smile properly. They need to brush for two minutes every morning and night and floss at least once a day (especially their back molars). If they like, rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash can provide extra protection! If your child is younger and you want to motivate them, play some music while they brush, or use a calendar they can mark off with fun stickers.
-If you are packing your child’s lunch, include tooth-friendly foods like crunchy fruits and vegetables which act like natural toothbrushes, removing plaque while they chew. Include low-fat cheese and milk as the calcium builds strong teeth and neutralizes oral acids. Tuck a water bottle in their backpack to help rinse oral debris if they can’t brush after eating.
-If your child is participating in contact or high-impact sports, have them fitted with a protective mouthguard to keep their teeth and oral tissues safe from harm.
