A toothache is pain in or around a tooth, and it always has a cause that needs a real diagnosis. See a dentist if the pain lasts more than two days, or if you have swelling in the face or jaw, or pain when you open your mouth wide. You do not have to name the cause yourself, that is our job.

A tooth abscess is a pocket of pus caused by a bacterial infection, and it will not clear on its own. A toothache that comes with swelling or fever is a signal to act, not to wait. Though rare, a mouth infection can spread, so being seen early is the calm choice.
Pulling the tooth is our last resort, not our first move. We first try to save it with a dental filling, a root canal, or a dental crown, and we remove a tooth only when it cannot be saved. Keeping your own tooth is almost always the better outcome.

Home remedies for a toothache give mild, temporary relief only, and they do not treat the cause. A salt-water rinse, a cold compress, or an over-the-counter pain reliever can take the edge off for a few hours. If the pain lasts more than two days, see a dentist and we can see you the same day.
No home remedy cures a toothache, and clove oil is no exception. Clove oil or whole cloves may briefly dull the pain, but they are not a cure, and pain that lasts more than two days needs a dentist. Use it for short relief on the way to your appointment, not instead of one.
Over-the-counter pain relievers and ibuprofen ease tooth pain, but they do not fix it. They calm the symptom while the cause stays put, so the pain tends to come back. When an OTC remedy is all that is keeping the pain down, it is time to be seen.
Antibiotics may be prescribed to control a tooth infection, but they do not remove the cause. The tooth still needs dental treatment, and an abscess will not clear on its own. Antibiotics can be one step, not the whole answer.
A toothache can seem to go away if the nerve dies or an abscess ruptures, but the problem is still there. It still needs treatment, and waiting can let an infection spread. Less pain does not mean the tooth is fixed.
Do not leave a toothache longer than two days, and get seen sooner if you have swelling or a fever. Persistent pain is a sign the tooth needs treatment. The sooner we look, the more likely we can get rid of the pain and save the tooth.
