Oral Hygiene Habits

Posted .

Good oral hygiene can help you avoid tooth decay and gum disease. The dentists at Valley View Dental, serving Romeoville, Oral Health Naperville – Plainfield, and Montgomery, IL, share a few tips that will help you keep your teeth strong and healthy.

Choose dental products that improve your oral health

The products that you use on your teeth play an important role in maintaining your oral health. Nearly all toothpaste contains fluoride, a mineral that strengthens tooth enamel, reducing your cavity risk. If you’re not sure if the toothpaste you use contains fluoride, look for the American Dental Association (ADA) seal on the package.

Spend a few minutes reading mouthwash labels the next time you visit the store. Products that contain fluoride and kill bacteria in your mouth offer the highest level of protection.

Perfect your technique

Do you use a good brushing technique when you brush in the morning and evening? For best results, tilt the head of your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle and use gentle pressure to clean your teeth. Prevent gum damage and enamel erosion by choosing a brush with soft bristles. Soft bristles are just as effective as harder bristles at removing plaque and are safer for your gums.

At least once each day, unroll an 18″ length of floss and remove the plaque that collects between your teeth. Use gentle up and down strokes to dislodge the plaque. It’s also important to floss around the base of your teeth. Fold the floss into a “U” shape and carefully clean the area between your teeth and gums.

Make time to visit the dentist

Tooth decay and dental problems can occur even if you follow a good oral hygiene routine. During your twice-yearly visits to our office, we’ll examine your mouth for signs of tooth decay and other oral health issues and clean your teeth. Although brushing and flossing remove plaque, it’s ineffective in getting rid of tartar, a hard substance that can cause gum disease. Our hygienists use special instruments to carefully scrape away tartar. After your visit, your teeth will look and feel cleaner and brighter.

Reduce your tooth decay risk with good oral hygiene. If it’s time for your next dental appointment, call the dentists at Valley View Dental serving Romeoville, Naperville, and Montgomery, IL.
