One of the services our team is pleased to offer our patients is same-day emergency care. This is important because sometimes, getting in to be seen can make all the difference, especially when it comes to your teeth. Call us if you experience any of the following dental emergencies.
Dental Emergencies
-Abscess: If you have an abscess (infection) in the mouth close to a tooth root or between your teeth and gums, this should never be ignored because it can spread to both neighboring teeth and gums, and worse, enter your bloodstream. You likely have an abscess if you can feel a painful, swollen cyst. You can rinse your mouth gently with salt water and place an icepack outside the swollen area while you wait to be seen.
-Chipped or broken tooth: Chipped teeth can also hurt, as happens when you bite down on something hard. Start by rinsing with warm water and placing some sterile gauze onto the tooth before placing a cold pack over your face where the tooth is broken. This will help lower any swelling while relieving your pain. Give us a call right away so we can schedule you as needed and give you further care instructions.
-Knocked-out tooth: Locate the tooth and hold it by the crown only, not the roots. You can rinse it if it has dirt on it, but avoid handling it so you don’t lose the attached tissue. You may gently put it into the socket or place it in a small container with milk or water. Call us so we can get you in ASAP to save the tooth.
-Lost filling or crown: Sometimes these dental restorations break, leaving your damaged tooth exposed to reinfection. You can put sugarless gum on the tooth while you are waiting to get in and bring the crown in to be reapplied if possible.
-Toothache: Tooth pain should never be ignored since it indicates decay in the affected tooth, and if you notice swelling around the tooth, that means there’s an infection that needs prompt care. Tip: don’t take painkillers (even aspirin) since they can burn your gum tissues. You can, however, place a cold pack on the outer area of your cheeks and give us a call so we can schedule you as soon as possible.
-Soft tissue injury: These oral areas include your cheeks, gums, lips and tongue which can bleed profusely when injured. Gently rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution and give us a call if the area feels painful or if the bleeding persists.
